A brief history
Pilates was originally developed by Joseph Pilates.
Joseph was determined to improve his own physical strength following childhood conditions including asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever.
He studied Eastern disciplines of yoga and martial arts and blended them with Western forms of physical activity, such as bodybuilding, gymnastics, boxing, and recreational sports, creating the Pilates Method.
He opened his first studio in New York in the late 1920's and gained notoriety within the New York dance community.
Joseph dedicated his life’s work to restoring the health and vitality of others.
His legacy lives on today with the Pilates Method practiced by pilates practitioners, physiotherapists, gym instructors, dancers and athletes.
